One of the most frustrating phrases I hear in my North Florida office is: “But
Doctor, the mold inspector said my air samples were clear.” The patient is
sitting in front of me with chronic fatigue, joint pain, and severe brain fog—
all classic signs of CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome)—yet
they believe their home is safe because of a 5-minute air test.
The “Snapshot” Problem
Traditional mold testing usually relies on “air traps.” An inspector comes in,
pulls air through a cassette for a few minutes, and looks for spores under a
microscope. Here is the “Straight-Talk” reality: Mold spores are heavy. They
don’t just float around waiting to be caught. They settle into your carpets,
your upholstery, and your dust within minutes. If the air is still during the
test, the test will likely come back “clean,” even if the walls are filled with
toxic growth.
Mycotoxins: The Invisible Threat
Even more importantly, standard air tests look for **spores**, but they don’t
look for **mycotoxins**. Mycotoxins are the toxic chemicals produced by the
mold. They are 50 times smaller than a spore. They easily pass through
drywall, flooring, and even HEPA filters. You can have a “dead” mold colony
that isn’t releasing spores anymore, but is still off-gassing toxic chemicals
that are making your family sick.
A Better Way: The “Investigator” Approach
In the humid climate of Florida and the south, where AC units run 24/7 and moisture
is a constant battle, we need a better diagnostic blueprint. At Foundational
Health, we recommend a two-pronged investigation:
1. Test the House (The Right Way)
Instead of air samples, we look at **ERMI (Environmental Relative
Moldiness Index)** or dust sampling. This looks at the “history” of the
home by analyzing the DNA of mold settled in the dust.
2. Test the Patient (The “Total Toxin” Way)
If you are sick, the most accurate “mold test” is your own body. We use
advanced urinary mycotoxin testing to see exactly what toxins your
system is struggling to clear. If your house is “clear” but your body is full
of Ochratoxin or Gliotoxin, we know we haven’t found the source yet.
Don’t Guess—Test the Foundation
If you’ve been told your home is fine but your health says otherwise, listen
to your body. In Jacksonville and the surrounding beaches, hidden moisture
is the norm, not the exception. We specialize in finding the “invisible”
drivers of illness that standard medicine misses.
Stop relying on snapshots. It’s time for a deep-dive investigation into your
environment and your health.
